Governor Newsom Already Sent “Secret Shoppers” to Disney World Last Week

In a press conference yesterday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that the state would be sending teams to theme parks in a response to a question about how California can learn from the reopening of Disney World. Newsom made it sound like state officials would be visiting theme parks this week, but an update from California Health and Human Services spokesperson Kate Folmar (via OC Register) indicates that officials have already visited the theme parks.

We sent health officials to open and operating theme parks out of state last week, independently of operators, to assess the health safeguards in practice.

These visits will help inform our pending theme park guidance.
Kate Folmar, California Health and Human Services spokesperson

Perhaps the interesting part of the statement is the fact that it looks like it was a “secret shopper”-type visit, with Folmar stating that officials visited the theme parks “independently of operators”.

Late last week, we saw Walt Disney World roll out new messaging across the theme parks and My Disney Experience app, taking a tougher stance on guests who aren’t wearing a mask properly by letting them know that they will be asked to leave the parks.

  1. The people most in need of being asked to leave will be the ones least likely to do so without creating some ridiculous scene that Disney will be desperate to avoid. CMs are likely to just fade away rather than escalate to the point that some “freedom fighter” has to dragged off. Fortunately the truly egregious incidents, such as CMs being spit on, are rare, nor do there seem to be any mass acts of anti-masking/anti-social distancing.

  2. Its unfortunate that no one seems to be able to follow the science that shows the face masks don’t do hardly anything in these settings from a CDC report ““In the 14 days before illness onset, 71% of case-patients and 74% of control participants reported always using cloth face coverings or other mask types when in public,” the report stated.” And outdoors, it’s really not needed since UV kills it quickly. not to mention forcing 2 year old children to wear them when Children rarely get it and probably never pass it on…

  3. The science sure isn’t evident above. Try https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/10/15/fact-check-cdc-report-masks-covid-19-tests-misinterpreted/3643312001/

The minions parroting the false claims about that (very small, and not looking at mask effectiveness) study are also failing to understand logical fallacy. As a hypothetical example: Saying 75% of firefighters are men does NOT then mean that 75% of men are firefighters.

The eager “told ya so” trumpeting about that study is wrong any way you look at it. Time to move on to the next bunkum.
