While visiting Magic Kingdom this morning, we noticed that Disney has begun the process of removing the planets and celestial bodies from the Astro Orbiter attraction. In fact, most of the planets have been removed as of this morning. As a refresher, a large crane appeared in Tomorrowland earlier this week for what we believe will be a full rebuild of the attraction. The removal of the planets, along with the length of the refurbishment, suggests that the attraction will be rebuilt over the next few months. Walt Disney World has not given a reopening date for the Tomorrowland spinner but has said that it is expected to reopen sometime this Summer.

In our article showcasing the arrival of the crane, we also had a last look at the attraction before the refurbishment. There was quite a bit of rust, and even some plant growth some three stories above Tomorrowland. We also have some “before” photos of the planets, which we’ll sprinkle in with photos from our visit to Magic Kingdom this morning. Let’s take a look!
The easiest way to tell when a planet or celestial body has been removed is an empty space within the frame of the theming where a planet might fit.

Another thing to look for is cut marks where theming has been removed.
