In a new report from the New York Times detailing Universal’s expansion for its theme park business, there is a tidbit about Universal Destinations & Experiences working on something for the popular Wicked franchise. The report quotes Mark Woodbury, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Destinations & Experiences, as saying that he knew that Wicked had to be used in the theme parks when he first saw the movie.
Wicked Coming to Universal Theme Parks
When I saw [Wicked], my first reaction was, “This is a theme park waiting to happen”
According to Box Office Mojo, Wicked racked up $728 million at the worldwide box office during a run that some believe was stunted due to Universal releasing the movie on streaming services rather quickly. Wicked: For Good, the second part of the story, will debut in theaters on November 21, 2025 and it sounds like Universal is already dreaming up plans on how to incorporate the world of Oz into its theme parks.
Back in November, Universal Orlando Resort Wicked: The Experience in its Universal Studios Florida theme park. The offering was a reuse of an existing space, something that allowed Universal to get Wicked into the theme parks quickly, but likely not permanently.
Wicked: The Experience, includes displays of film costume and prop replicas, Elphaba and Glinda-themed photo ops, and exclusive themed merch. Guests can also enjoy sweets, savory treats, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at Emerald City Eats, outside Wicked: The Experience.
The report from the New York Times did not detail where or when guests may get to experience a Wicked attraction, but there are plenty of expansion plots in the new Epic Universe theme park, and certainly some underperforming corners of Universal Orlando Resort’s existing theme parks in Orlando, its theme park in California, or a new theme park planned for the United Kingdom.
