Walt Disney Imagineering Confirms New Cars-themed Rally Race Attraction Will Use Track-Based Ride System Despite Rumors

In a new episode of We Call It Imagineering, Imagineers discussed the upcoming Cars-themed off-road rally race attraction coming to an expanded area of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. The attraction will take guests over various terrain as it simulates an off-road experience through a hilly region. In the video Imagineers confirmed that the attraction would utilize a track-based system, shutting down early rumors that it would be a trackless ride system.

Cars-themed Attraction to Utilize Track-Based System

Not only did Imagineers verbally confirm that the “vehicle will steer itself through a track system”, they also utilized video shown off at the recent SXSW conference, showing a vehicle traveling along a track with bumps positioned strategically to create the feel of traveling in an off-road environment.

As seen in the concept art below, Imagineers will demolish the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island to create a Cars-themed expansion to Frontierland that will take guests “into the wilderness beyond Radiator Springs”. In the distance, we can see Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, while the current Frontierland facades will remain as seen on the left side of the image.

Walt Disney World has not announced a closing date for the Rivers of America or Tom Sawyer Island, but they have cleared key regulatory hurdles to allow them to move forward on the project.
