Earlier this year, the Planet Hollywood Superstore closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Now, Disney’s rebranding of the area into the Majestic Theater appears to be complete.
Located on Sunset Blvd, the Majestic Theater really ties the theme of Sunset Blvd together in a way that the Planet Hollywood Superstore didn’t. Imagineer Zach Riddley recently took to Instagram to talk about the backstory of the area. Here’s what he shared:
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard bring to life the glitz and glamor of the golden age of a Hollywood. We differentiate these two areas through the use of distinctive architecture and detailing: Hollywood Boulevard is designed as a merchant district of the 1920s and ’30s, while Sunset Boulevard is a theatre and entertainment district of the 1930s and ’40s. As you can see in these photos through the years, Sunset Boulevard’s brilliant neon marquees, including the recently added “The Majestic Theater,” give the thoroughfare a distinctive, kinetic, and nostalgic feel indicative of tinsel town’s famous theaters.
This theatrical neon design also extends to the park’s iconic Chinese Theatre, where the marquee for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is brought to “light” by blinking bulbs and animated depictions of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse created with real, hand-crafted neon. This marquee takes its design cue from the extravagant made-for-the-movie marquees that were custom designed for the Hollywood premieres of epic films in the mid-20th century.
