Scrims Continue to Expand, Blocking Haunted Mansion Facade at Magic Kingdom

Good morning from a chilly Magic Kingdom, where scrims have expanded in front of the Haunted Mansion attraction. We’ve been tracking changes at Haunted Mansion since late December, when Walt Disney Imagineering filed an interesting permit. Since then, we’ve seen the arrival of scrims and now the continued expansion of said scrims. Here’s a look at the Haunted Mansion from our visit to Magic Kingdom this morning.

Scrims Expand at Haunted Mansion

We’ll start with a look at the Haunted Mansion as seen this morning. Here are a few before/current photos to show how the scene has changed since we last checked in on the project last week.

Here are some more photos from today.

As for what the work could be, it’s getting interesting. The Haunted Mansion has undergone exterior refurbishments before, and this is starting to look a little different. Here’s a look back at how Disney handled an exterior refurbishment back in 2016.

While a facade refresh would be the simple explanation, it’s very possible that there is more at play here. While the exact plans remain a secret, I would imagine that there would be an operational need to expand or even relocate the queue for the Haunted Mansion. The queue regularly expands beyond the wrought iron gates and into the streets of Liberty Square. That probably won’t be acceptable once those areas are required for walkways to the Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park under construction nearby.

Additionally, it’s possible that there will be some work required to preserve sightlines around the Haunted Mansion. As we previously covered, land clearing for Villains Land is encroaching on the Haunted Mansion, removing much of the foliage that preserved views from around the attraction. With trees removed, there could be opportunities for the massive show building to come into view. It’s possible that this work is related to facade modifications or expansions to preserve sightlines.

The Haunted Mansion attraction remains open and unaffected during the exterior work.
