CDC Updates Mask Guidance: Face Masks Protect Wearer

In an update to their face mask guidelines, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made a rather significant change in their stance on masking science. Previously, the CDC said that masks protect those around you from your own droplets or aerosols.

Now, the CDC says that masks not only protect others, but also the wearer as a means of “filtration for personal protection”. In the updated guidance, the CDC says that “studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns.”

Of course, a face mask is mandatory at Walt Disney World for both guests and Cast Members. Disney has rolled out new signage and protocols as health officials and experts learn more about COVID-19. Most recently, Disney has banned eating and drinking in queues.

According to local officials, no outbreak of COVID-19 has been traced back to Walt Disney World since its reopening back in mid-July.

Perhaps the most important part of the guidance from CDC comes at the end of the brief and says that “adopting universal masking policies can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation.”
