Continuing our coverage of a recent interview on CNBC with Disney CEO Bob Chapek, we now turn to the topic of layoffs. Chapek was asked about the possibility of more layoffs within the theme parks division and said that recent communications from the State of California have reason to give Disney pause when it comes to ensuring there won’t be more layoffs.
We hope [we don’t have to make more layoffs at the theme parks]. We’re watching very carefully what the state of California does as an indicator for whether we can retain some of our Cast that are right now on furlough. We’d like to keep them on furlough until we can reopen, but…I think what the government said was “no time soon, we’re not going to be pressured into reopening”. That obviously gives us some pause. We’d like to put our Cast Members back to work. As many of them, as soon as possible, if the government would let us do it.
Chapek is referencing a recent interview with California Governor Gavin Newsom where the governor essentially makes a u-turn on previous statements where he said that the state would offer Disneyland reopening guidelines “very, very shortly”. That statement came nearly a month ago. More recently, Newsom seemingly distanced himself from those statements, saying that the state of California is in “no hurry” to issue reopening guidelines to Disneyland and other major theme parks.
The Disney Parks division has already announced layoffs for 28,000 Cast Members, nearly 30% of its workforce.
