Completely gutted. EPCOT. A match made in heaven these days. As we await word on the status of previously announced (but maybe canceled) projects, work continues on the Innoventions East section of EPCOT. As a reminder, this is the section that is still represented on the EPCOT digital map, and the former home of MouseGear and Electric Umbrella.

Today, we were afforded a wonderful view inside thanks to the demolition of a single wall that previously hid some of the work. Guests waiting in line at Spaceship Earth and entering the park on the Test Track side of the “progress walls” are able to get a wonderful view of a gutted structure.

In this photo below, we can see the space that used to be Innoventions East, housing a variety of interactive exhibits over the years. Now, it’s a shell waiting for an overhaul. On the left side, you can see drywall. On the other side of that drywall is the temporary MouseGear location, and maybe some stock rooms. This space will become a new restaurant and probably a Starbucks.

Here’s a look at some concept art Disney released last year of their plans for the space.

The image below takes a look at a recessed area to the left of the wider construction image above. This really is a cavernous space that Disney will hopefully put to good use.

Shifting our view to the right now, we can see the whole area is gutted trough to the new MouseGear location. The construction recently hit a milestone that we examined in an earlier post.

Disney really has a clean slate here to create whatever they want. Hopefully the plans are ambitious enough to be worthy of the time and effort.
